There are many statistics that prove that the crime rate in countries/states/counties that have outlawed legal gun ownership has skyrocketed, because the criminals know that the law abiding now own no guns.

Countries that have high rates of gun ownership have high rates of firearm deaths & injuries.
Those that have low rates of gun ownership have low rates of death & injury due to firearms.

If people feel the need to continue this line of discussion then i think the Cafe would be an apporpriate place.

Same is true of automobiles eh. But as to guns it is not always true.
Switzerland for example requires that each household with a military service age person serve in the military. They keep their military weapon and amo in the home.
When they go out for the evening, they seldom bother locking the doors. Yet they have one of the lowest crime rates and an extremely low gun crime/death rate.
Criminals just don't barge in and murder the occupants because they know for certain the home is occupied by someone who not only has a firearm, but they damn well know how to use it properly.

When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again.

My solution for the problem is as following.
If cited for DWI or illegal cell phone use the following penalty should be imposed, even on the likes of Paris Hilton;)
Conditions of punishment as follows.
Once each week rent a race track and charge admission for the events.
Each shall be brought to the same blood alcohol leve as when arrested.
50 percent of the perticipants will be made to drive their own vehicle clockwise around the track, while the rest will be required to drive counter clockwise.
Cell Phone abusers will be mixed in with the DWI drivers and required to answer or originate 1 call per lap.
All laps must exceede 75MPH average speed in ordered to be counted.
All insurance coverage is waived during the event, so if your car gets smashed, you have to pay out of your own pocket to have it repaired.
Punishment is not satisfied untill the required number of laps are completed.

1st Offense 10 laps
2nd Offense 20 laps
3rd Offense 40 laps
all additional 100 laps

City, County, and State agencies would make a fortune on the ticket sales.

That does sound like fun to watch. Although it would make the justice system even more of a mockery for the rich. I can see them in a specially designed car (tank), while the poor are using their only means of transportation.

Ticket sales is only part of the income that could be made... Gambling on who will survive, etc. is where the big money would come in.

In my opinion, driving while talking on the phone kills more people than handguns in this country. It is a antisocial activity and should be banned.

heck, "medical misadventures" kill more people in the us each year than firearms do!

I could quote the usual 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people.', but that would just be parroting the NRA's bottom line. Even though it is true. There are many statistics that prove that the crime rate in countries/states/counties that have outlawed legal gun ownership has skyrocketed, because the criminals know that the law abiding now own no guns.

Guns don't kill people, bullets do.

Last time we had a debate about "the G word" in the Technical News forum, it got more and more heated, and totally off topic to the original thread. It then got closed by Matt.

I suggest that this thread is going the same way. The Cafe is probably the best place for off topic follow-ups to threads like this.

Yes, please take it to the Cafe. When things got off course in this thread and I realized this was not the proper venue for the topic, I started a thread in the Cafe....."Gun Ownership....right or wrong". It has been fairly active, and for the most part has had reasonable discourse on the subject.

Make them use (provided that it is still in working condition, of course) whatever car they were in during the infraction - that solves the "rich" problem. If the car is no longer working, due to "accident", make the offender use a car of similar size and shape.

Talkin' about "Slow Goin'", the title of this thread. There is something that's slow goin' right now - these goddamn forums and the "pending credit" table. I aint got time to fart around with the slow goin' Seti site today and this is the only message I'll write (if it will even get through). Of course maybe most don't even prefer to see my messages anyway - they will be comforted. But now is not the time for Seti. It's time to head for the piano and then another site to see what was goin' on during the fifties in Great Britain on the popular songs front. There were a lot of similarities- and differences- among British and American popular songs then. It's interesting. And a lot more interesting than waiting at the sluggish Seti site. I know everybody at SetiAdmin (and others as well) is doing his/her best and this is not a complaint. It's just an indication and a misfortune. Maybe tomorrow.

Aw heck, Clyde. I don't mind your posts. You usually have a pretty good insight as to what is going on.
As far as the pending credit are concerned, mine have been dropping considerably. Down from around 27,000 last week to around 17,000 today. Don't know if it's because it has been almost 4 weeks since the major server crash and the ghosties are expiring on their own, or if the server changes made just prior to this weekend are helping to clean things up a bit. Mebbe a bit o' both.
Perhaps Matt or Eric will find the time this afternoon and give the servers another big ol' kick to get things flowing again, but I wouldn't blame them if they wait until Monday morning. I am still crunching my caches, and uploads seem to be working OK. If I gotta wait until Monday to report the results, I'm good with that.
Have a nice afternoon with your musical interests!

Thanks, Mark, for your good comments and wishes. I see that your RAC has made a partial return, and the same for mine. I know that Admin and other helpers are doing their best. I just saw a minor disappointment but realized that there were (and are today) lots of other interesting things I can do besides wasting time waiting for the green bar to fill.
