Hallo,
I!m Whisper from Belgium.
I found it real sloppy off the organisation, that they didn't did the effort to mail al the volonteers off this long offline beeing. (mails for donations can wel).
I hope that the will have more respect fore the thousenden free volonteers who give their pc and electricite on this science job.
But if a still so unfair keep treated, no mail with a word of explanitian, i consider to stop right now.
sssa mail with explainanation , and wath will happen and when we can expect the first work ,en so on is the least they coud do.

(so, for UNIX u haven't to pay a license.)

Only if you steal a copy.
LINUX & BSD are based on UNIX, but they are not UNIX.

BSD is UNIX. FreeBSD, OpenBSD and netBSD are not UNIX.
Tullio

I would like to remind people that the B in BSD stands for Berkeley.

Touche' .... and let me tell those that don't know that BSD was generated initially from UNIX version7 tapes obtained from AT&T under an educational license available from AT&T at the time. This was what was on the BSD 2.8/2.9 tapes used on the PDP-11... Afterwards, BSD 4.3 was released for the VAX and other systems available back then.. This was based on the AT&T UNIX SYSTEM3 tapes (the immediate predecessor of SYSTEM5)... System5 was never really released on an educational license, so, any SYS5 code or clones thereof needed to be added to BSD a bit at a time (not literally bit by bit..) What parts were added and not omitted....

So, that is where the BSD variants parted company with other systems that were based on SYSTEM5... The final AT&T UNIX SYS9/PLAN9 was never released by AT&T, so, there is no way of knowing whether or not any of the code ever leaked and were or were not incorporated into Linux or BSD.

Regardless of it's specific parentage or direct or indirect heritage, BSD,Linux and UNIX ... i.e. *NIX is one heck of an O.S. And... it's all UNIX, no matter what the specific flavor...

This is complete bull$hit. I would call sun and yell and scream like a customer at Walmart.

So you are saying scream at the company that donated you a $50,000 server because its gonna take another day or two to ship it? Nice attitude dood. Still mad Walmart didn't hire you?

Nice trendy, 80's way of spelling dude, dood. Yes, I would start yelling at them... let me guess, you're the type that when the mechanic tells you that it's going to be another week, you cower and agree with them.

Anyway, get it up, get it running, and let's get crunching

When they're working on my car for free, including all the replacement parts, then yes, I let them do it however the hell they want. You've never heard the phrase "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"?

The donation E-Mails took weeks to send. E-Mail just isn't that fast when you have hundreds of thousands of recipients.

Been there, and at the time it was the car I could afford. I thanked the mechanic for his help and saved up some money and bought a newer car when I had the money.

We're talking about a $50,000 server. SETI doesn't have a spare $50k so they can afford to tell anyone to go jump. Sun is GIVING them a replacement FOR FREE.

Sun is being very cool and the folks at SETI are doing an incredible job given that they have practically no budget.

I don't believe the new server is entirely FREE.

Eric posted the following a few days ago in another thread.

Close, but not quite. The v40z is jocelyn. Currently jocelyn is a replica of the BOINC database machine. Sidious is the current BOINC database. Thumper was the SETI@home science database and was a prototype Sun Fire X4500. The price tag on the replacement is a bit higher a v40z (even though they are currently on sale for $24,000) and we certainly are grateful to Sun for reducing that to a price we could afford.

The server should be in our hands sometime on Monday.

It's not about "cowering" and being agreeable - it's about not being an ass toward those that are doing you a favor.

I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of people out there that still think the only way to get things done is by being a demanding a*hole.

- Don't look a gift horse in the mouth
- Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You
- You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar
- A little kindness goes a long way
- Life isn't about how much you can get done, but how many lives you can touch in a positive way
- Destroy your enemies by making them your friends (I believe that was Abraham Lincoln)

Heard of any of those?

Used to have to deal with that type all too often in a previous job. The more noise they made, the further back in the queue they'd go.

Oh noes!!!11 It's the dreaded "I have nothing intelligent to say so I will have to resort to picking on a grammatical technicality and dodge your question with a petty insult" tactic!!!

Well to answer your question, I am actually the type that just calls out selfish ignorant people like yourself, and watches them continue to make a total ass of themselves if front of the entire seti@home community. Oh well, as the late Douglas Adams said: "You live and learn. At any rate, you live."

Regarding Win2k/wk3 server box, no one forces you to reboot. It is yours, as an admin, decission to/when install updates and reboot. My Win2k3 desktop box is rebooted only once a month (due to updates). It works 24/7, use it to play, browse, code, test, emulate other OSes, write, and all typical desktop stuff, yet it hadn`t hanged/crashed since i installed Win2k3 there. Oh yes... it runs BOINC in the background...

My company`s server also runs Win2k3, and is rebooted less often. Its usuall uptime is over 100-120 days and reboots are also caused by windows updates. Apart from that - rock solid.

Please, stop useless Linux vs. Windows rants...

Win2k3 has currently the most efficient NT kernel (NT 5.2 sp1)... and it runs on a weaker hardware than win2k server...

from the home page:

Sun is graciously replacing this server.

I don't know exactly what this means, but it sounds pretty inexpensive.

Well, dude......
My best friend happens to also be my mechanic. We both work on weekends keeping my '85 RX7 GSLSE purring along. But I'm the type that realizes that when he's had a tough week working with top-paying customers, my work which he does for little or nothing is done on HIS schedule, not mine. It's not cowering, it's being a gentleman.
Suggest you consider the same.

Heck, if they want to send one out my way, I'd be willing to wait until friday AFTERNOON for it.
Hurry up and wait has always been an integral part of the IT world, and at the going price, replacing the "hurry up" with "drink beer" seems an elegant solution.

You can have the beer, I'll take a single-malt scotch, preferably an Islay.

Whatever happened to FedEx's slogan, "When it absolutely, positively HAS to be there overnite!"? Or was the new server shipped FedEx Ground?

You mean the company that has yet to find my two 20" widescreen monitors which have shown "out for delivery" since the 19th of last month??? You mean them?

If ya mean UPS, yeah... (you did note the "formerly"?)

In your case, I'd file a claim with the carrier, and the shipper. I've heard of cases like yours, and it's either a dishonest employee, or the package was left in an insecure area. (the case I heard, it turned out to be the former)

As SETI is still taking in finished units, the deadline issue is a non issue. When units are sent out there will be appropriate deadlines based on past practice. (IMHO)

[snip]

There is still a deadline issue - it is currently very hard to report completed WU's, as the scheduler is dealing with huge numbers of "ronco boxes" ("set and forget") whose owners don't know of the work blackout. The boxes are bugging the scheduler for work, which makes a "reporting xx completed WUs" scheduler request time-out about 50-90% of the time. Even a simple "update my stats" scheduler request seldom goes thru...
