I've used the old seti@home for years. I wanted to start doing it again since I have a better computer only to learn that I have to use the boinc manager. I've managed to figure out a few things on my own but I was wondering 1.) Pending credit how long will it be pending if no other user verifies it say after a couple weeks what happens to the pending credit? Do I get the credit or is it removed from my pending list? & what determines the amount of credit received? 2.) What is boinc wiki? |

I've used the old seti@home for years. I wanted to start doing it again since I have a better computer only to learn that I have to use the boinc manager. I've managed to figure out a few things on my own but I was wondering How long credits remain pending depends on several factor. Among them is how fast the other computers assigned the WU are in reporting the work. In a worst case scenario it could be several months where if the WU deadline date is very long (in some cases as much as 5 weeks at the Seti project) and the assigned WU result is never sent back (due to a computer failure or volunteer just quitting Boinc) requiring that the work be sent out again to another computer. As many as six addition WU copies (4 are initially distributed) could be sent out under a worst case situation. If a quorum is never reached, where the various results just don't agree, no credit is issued. I've personally never experienced neither of these extreme cases but they can't be ruled out. Most credits are issued within a week or so but we do have volunteers with very old computers that barely make deadlines. At Seti the amount of credit received depends on the number of computations required to produce the result data. Seti has stopped using the benchmark for calculating credits as this produced to much inconsistency of claimed credits between various CPUs and Operating systems. Depending on the WU crunched credits can vary from .01 (usually rounded to 0 for display purpose in your account page) to about 100. The usual range is between 30 and 60. Here is a Wiki starting point on Credits
The Boinc Wiki is the largest single source of information about how Boinc and its projects work. It is assembled by a small group of volunteers to be a computation of detailed and cross referenced information. It is continuously evolving as Boinc itself evolves. Think of it as the Boinc encyclopedia. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

I've managed to figure out a few things on my own but I was wondering Hi Mark, I've also recently returned to SETI, and this new BOINC stuff does take a bit of getting used to, but it's worh it if you stay the course. In the old "classic" S@H you got a Workunit (WU) your computer did some stuff in the background, then sent the result back and got another WU. As far as I can remember, evey WU had the same value, although some crunched faster than others. Now every WU is sent out to 4 computers, at least 3 have to be returned sucessfully before credit is granted. Usually it takes less than a week, but it can sometimes take longer, my longest Pending so far has been about 3 weeks. If your other "quorum partners" don't return their results by the deadline, that WU is re-sent to one or more new hosts. In the new improved BOINC SETI, there are a lot more features. Great for the geeks; but the learning curve is a lot steeper. It's a bit like moving from a family car into a racing car, or from a Cessna into a 747. These forums are mostly very helpful, just don't try to run before you can walk. Good Luck, Keith |

Thanks for the answers guys..learning a bit here and there everyday. I have two computers working both of them equal in CPU memory etc..I don't use the screensaver I've learned that a blank screen helps crunching the WU's faster. McBorg'ers: Over 1,000,000 assimilated |

To crunch faster still checking the Number Crunching Forum and the Optimized Version Threads. Chicken puts out some outstanding products and even though the current version has a small bug, it is VERY fast! |

Better yet - versions without the bug were released yesterday. Anyone who has already followed Mikey's excellent advice should upgrade again to Simon's Optimised Application version 2.2B |
