Intel just demo'd an 80 core cpu. IBM has opened the door to huge cpu caches. It wont be too far down the road, and computer systems with dozens or even 100's of cpu cores and large fast memories will be common. Has any thought/work been done on redesigning Seti software to take advantage of such an environment? How much more in-depth analysis/processing could be done with 80 or 100 heavily cached cores and gigabytes of fast memory? How would you change the software if you knew it had teraflop performance at its disposal?

BOINC can use unlimited CPUs. BOINC starts a SETI (or other science application) for each CPU. So there is no Limit.
In the TOP 100 of SETI are still some large Unix systems with about 128 CPUs.

The biggest thing this will do, IMO, is too make people sign up for other Projects as well as Seti. Seti by itself may not be able to supply enough work to keep 200,000 of us happy each with 80 core cpus! And those of use with more than one pc, well multiple 80 core pc's will just blow thru the Seti work faster than it can be created, IMO!. This will do the one thing the other Projects are screaming about though...share the wealth of Seti users. Boinc is designed so other Projects can share Seti's users, this happens now, but not to the extent that they would like. This will be both a blessing and a bad thing for those Projects. They will get more users, but they will also have to support and provide work to those same users.
It will be interesting any way it goes down though!
