Should be a monster cruncher. Take a look at mine. It has core duo, not core 2 duo, they are both very good chips however, and much better than anything based on the pentium 4 netburst architecture. My specs were as follows

Inspiron E1705, Intel Core Duo Processor T2600 (2MB/2.16GHz/667MHz)
17.1 Inch TrueLife Wide-screenWUXGA+, for Inspiron E1705
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHZ,2 DIMM for Inspiron E1705
256mb Nvidia Geforce Go 7900gs
200gb 4200RPM SATA HARD DRIVEI
Xp Media center, tv tuner
Integrated 10/100 Network
8X DVD+/-RW Drive for InspironE1705
Sound blaster Audigy HD, integrated Subwoofer
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Your system is very similar, should be a 1000RAC+ crucnher

Nice machine!

I have a fairly new T7600 iMac (2.33ghz), which today hit a RAC best of 2176. It's a daily working machine (nothing too strenuous, just email, spreadsheets, web browsing etc.). I am hoping that it will break 2200 over the christmas down-time, while it's idle. Avoiding those low-credit/hour WUs would help too. =;^).

Make sure you use Chicken's Optimized version for the most RAC.

2176 of RACs by a single machine? How is that possible? I have a 2.8 GHz dual-core Pentium D and my highest RAC is about 400. What's wrong?

Congrats on the new machines...Santa looks like he has been busy. I too, am thinking about building a new primary home machine over the break (teahers get this little two week perk since we get paid so crappy). I have always been an AMD man myself, but I think I am going to have to go Core 2 Duo as well...looking at the 6700/2000fsb/4M chip and an Intel board with 2Gig dual channel DDR2 and Windows Xp 64 bit system...so that will give me something to do for a day or so when it comes in.........

Er, that does seem a bit low.

Are you using an optimized app? I'd recommend this one.

When I ran my P-D 805 2.66 at stock speed (it's since been oc'd to 4 GHz and now pulls 1.3K RAC), it was pulling around 650-700 RAC using the 1.3 (old) optimized app. The new 2.0 one I linked above should give you a little more than that, so say around 750 - 850 should be possible, more if you overclock a little bit.

HTH,
Simon.

No. I am using the regular SETI@home 5.15. I haven't overclocked my computer. So, is my RAC ok?

PS. Thanks for the URL! Happy Holidays!

I have to agree with Simon, one of my sons has a P4 3GHz HT Northwood, i.e. one off the early HT models. If that was to crunch 24/7 exclusively for Seti we would expect an RAC of about 700 using Simon's optimised app.

It's about what I'd expect using the stock app, yes.

zombie67 is using an optimized app for his T7600 iMac, that's why he can pull such a high RAC (he's using Alex Kan's excellent OSX optimized apps).

I *do* run chicken's apps on my windows and linux boxes.

But this is a Mac. Chicken's apps don't run on Macs. However, I am using alexkan's awesome app. All other things being equal, Mac + alexkan > windows + chicken, I believe.

400? That is *low*. It's not apples to apples (heh), but my *single* core 1.8ghz G5 maxed out at 523. Of course, this is with alexkan's optimized SETI app.

How do you have such a high RAC? Thats twice the RAC of my t2600! I'm using an optimized client and everything. Is the 7000 series really that different than the 2000? I know it has twice the cache but does that really make a 1000RAC difference?

But I have never used Mac computers before so I don't know much about them :(

and I am going to order a G5 Desk top :-)

so could you recommend to me the latest and Greatest model # ...... and Best Configuration for crunching SETI@home?

Well, G5s no longer exist, except as used (ebay), or on Apples website as refurbished:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=14FBC7C5&nclm=CertifiedMac

Your choices for desktops are:

Mac Mini $600-900 (Core Duo mobile)
iMac $1-2.5k (Core 2 Duo mobile, includes built in monitor) This is the one I got 2176 RAC.
Mac Pro, $2.2-5.5k (Core 2 Duo based Xeon, 2x cual core chips) These are the boxes dominating the top hosts list on SETI. Also, everyone expects apple to come out with a dual quad (8-way!) version sometime soon.

All of these are also available as refurbs, if you want to save some cash. Full warranty.

So it really comes down to whether you want a monitor built in, and how much you want to spend.

Whatever you get, make sure you get at least 1gb RAM. And if you go with the Mac Pro, make sure you get at least 4 DIMMs, whatever size you choose.

It's good to see Mac finally getting competetive on prices these days, perhaps they can get a little bigger slice of the pie. Comparable hardware MS or Linux machines can still be aquired for a few hundred less in most cases, ie laptop for < $500. I bought parts and put together my own Core 2 Duo E6600 that has done a little better than 2400 RAC running the chicken apps. The Mac when it gets 8 core machines can begin to compete on even footing with the current top spot occupant since they will at least then have equal hardware. The Core 2 Duo and Quatro are able to finish a work unit faster than their Xeon counterparts per CPU. This is because they can be OC to a higher level than the XEON based machines and the difference in bus speed is not that great between XEON and a well OC Conroe.
The Core 2 Quatro running Chicken apps will process a WU of 62.40 RAC about 5 minutes faster than the top placed 4 processor XEON based Mac, and my Core 2 Duo will process the same WU in about 8 or 9 minutes faster. I built my machine for under $1100.
When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again.
