I'm curious about Nez and the others listed as top generators and listed as "individuals." How do they generate numbers like that? |

Lots of computers. If I remember correctly Nez runs a data center that frequently upgrades the computers. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

[humor on] Nez is Bill Gates and every Internet connected Windows pc in the world is running SETI but very slowly as an extremely well hidden background service. The results are sent back every time it auto-updtaes on the second tuesday of the month ! [/humor off] |

[humor on] Perhaps a judicious analysis of past SETI outages combined with an analysis of problems with WIndows update can settle that issue !! Come to think of it, WIndows updates are on tuesdays and so are the SETI server backups !!! Now is that a conspiracy or what ??? Ha!! |

[conspiracy mode] Perhaps Berkeley just noticed a regular dip in WU traffic on Tuesdays and so chose that time due to the minimum loading on their databases at that time... Happy conspirin', ;-/ Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Didn't it used to be Wednesdays? Then Matt went on vacation, leaving others to do it, and they moved it to Tuesday, and it never got moved back. Probably couldn't pick Monday as they might have damage control from the weekend to fix. Couldn't pick a weekend as noone's home. Couldn't pick Friday because something might happen causing them to work the weekend attempting to fix it. Thursday's way to close to Friday to risk it. So they are left with Tuesday or Wednesday. Now they pick 9 a.m probably because either: A: it gives them time to drink coffee before starting B: Matt just dragged himself in C: both the above |

And Wednesday is too close to Thursday... So Tuesday it is! Now they pick 9 a.m probably because either: Good guesses but that all sounds far too rational and especially so for Matt :-P Nah... More likely to do with the canteen serving Matt's favorite pudding on Tuesdays and so the database shutdown guarantees the offline time to not need the coffee-and-cookies feed over a hot keyboard... Now they pick 9 a.m probably because either: They pick 10 a.m. Berkeley local time, and usually come close to it. That's 1800 UTC when Berkeley is on PST and 1700 UTC for PDT. I think you've got the reasons about right. Joe |

Maybe you should try some: Cocaine, Liquid Blow or some Crunk? But I bet someone in your position might prefer something more like: Go Fast Rocketman? Oh, for those that don’t know…. these are some of the latest High Energy Drinks you can buy. |

Hey! We can't have you inciting drunk-driving of the s@h project servers! Matt is proscribed a strict regimen of distilled water only. (Viscosity and vapours need not be checked, no naked flames, no operating circuit breakers within 10 metres, maintain a well ventilated environment... ;-) ) Cheers, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I'm curious about Nez and the others listed as top generators and listed as "individuals." How do they generate numbers like that? We are all NEZ. The REAL Truth about BOINC/SETI is that it is actually run by the NSA. The whole looking-for-aliens-thing is just a cover to get you to run it. NEZ is the Secret part built into BOINC/SETI that constantly spies on you, making sure you are not an Evil-Doer. |

[humor on] Except that it is all highly encrypted and does all sorts of non-standard trickery. The bits going back aren't a continuous stream when NEZ updates. They trickle out here and there, hiding in all sorts of traffic that looks normal to you and I! NEZ resides deep in your TCP/IP stack. And don't think you are off the hook if you use open source either, because NEZ resides deep in all compilers too! I'm also hearing reports that they are now also doing trickery to embed NEZ into silicon as well. Intel, AMD/ATI, Nvidia, etc, are all in cohorts with the NSA NEZ Mainframe. There is no escape!!! I think they are trying to silence me too, because sometimes when I pick up my phone there isn't a dial tone! |

... NEZ resides deep in your TCP/IP stack. And don't think you are off the hook if you use open source either, because NEZ resides deep in all compilers too! And that is one beauty of open source: The source code is open to all to view and review and compare. (Including comparing compiler output.) Some time ago, there was an attempt to open a backdoor into new Linux systems by the very careful tweaking of a security permissions test. It was noticed and eliminated long before being released. There's even automated tools to independantly check the code for silliness or whatever possible "NEZ"-isms! (Unlike the 'obscurity' and cross-all-your-digits wild naievity of a certain proprietary OS that consequently pollutes the web with "viruses"... :-( ) I'm also hearing reports that they are now also doing trickery to embed NEZ into silicon as well. IBM, AMD/ATI, Nvidia, etc, are all in cohorts with the NSA NEZ Mainframe. There is no escape!!! Is that also called DRM/Palladium/"WGA"?... So what is genuine? And could you trust it?!
