I think hiamps was referring to the "private" Seti USA optimized science application.

Yes this version is only for seti.usa users.
When i remember Daniel S. was beta tester in our team with crunch3rs app.
He learned enough to compile his own and now its limited to his group.
Nice try.

I see their is also a version 5.5.6 for Windows there (boinc_5.5.6_windows_intelx86.exe) This wouldn't be the same would It?

5.5.6 is the current alpha-test version of BOINC.

As a general rule, the alpha test versions are only a little buggy....

many alpha test versions of boinc work just fine, or have small bugs which are workable. At this time I wouldn't recommend anyone try 5.5.4 or 5.5.6 as they DO still have bugs. The most prominent is that if you install as a service, it won't shut down. There are others that are being worked on. So for the moment 5.4.9 should be just fine. Use at your own risk.

That isn't a bug, that is a "feature"! "All your CPU cycles are belong to us!"

Hey, it's an improvement over 5.5.2 which you couldn't Uninstall without goofing around, so not shutting down is an improvement over not uninstallable. LOL

Thats cool I use the chickens...I just find it kind of funny the way some of your team members bragg about stats and it is not even comparing apples to apples...and wondered why so many of them hide their computers...I would like to see some comparisons though.

Indeed ;) I'm confident there is a lot going on with BOINC development as the boinc_dev mailing list has picked up in volume lately.

Hello!

It is very sad that a team write a special app for only their team!!!!! :-(

Why?

I think only to become more Credits!

This makes me sad!

We all are here to support the science, or?

When maybe this app is now the fastest getable... and they are good people... they must give it to all S@H users!
That´s my personal opinion!

BTW. This is allowed from the side of Berkeley?

Greetings!

It is good that I´m not the only one here that would like to support the science! :-)
Now I am somewhat luckier! :-)

The worst bug in 5.5.6 is that work fetch is broken...

[edit] Used the correct term.

SETI.USA doesn't care about the science - they care about being #1. That's why they had a private optimized client and wouldn't give it out.

Faster science is okay... only if it increases their credit and nobody else's!

Legally, yes, it is allowed under the terms of the GPL. Someone could of course ask for their source, but they probably didn't modify the source in any interesting way.

When Berkeley chose GPL, this is one possible consequence.

... and I suspect it is available to all -- but you'd have to be a member of SETI.USA. As far as I can tell, everyone is eligible.

Well We who aren't a part of seti.usa don't want their stuff, Not when We have excellent Chicken made apps that run like, well, Chickens. ;) :D And Chickens are very fleet of foot usually. I accept only publicly available apps.

Yea I had thought about joining for their client but like you would only use a public available app as that way my results are comparable. Now I can really see how much Simon gave. The World needs more people like him. And we don't have to hide our computers....

Hello!

I think it´s not in the name of S@H that some kind of people take a special app only for their team.
And you must be with in the team to become the app.

That´s not nice!

O.K., O.K., there are a lot of others who can write apps too,
but again it´s not in the spirit of S@H to do this only for one team!

Greetings!

PS. Somebody knows the performance of this app?

It may not be the friendliest thing around, but they are allowed to do so. I know of no rule that requires them to be friendly to participate.

The person who did the work, and the people who bought the compiler have a right to decide how to distribute what they've made.

From what I've read, they've done the same things that our friend Simon has done, so I would expect their apps. to be just about the same.

So, join their team and get their apps. or just run the ones from your friendly neighborhood chicken.

Daniel S, the person that wrote the Seti.USA version, has helped Chicken and there is no reason to think the Chicken version is any slower than the Seti.USA version. AND as stated elsewhere the Chicken version is available to ANYONE.
Here is where you can get Chicken's optimised versions http://www.zadra.org/seti_enhanced/. There are version for both Linux and Windows OS's and other OS's are in the works. And as I said, it is FREE!
