hello seti,

i have been running the seti application for over 2 years now, and i wonder if there is any way that i can get updated concerning the actual results of the search. i guess we didnt find any meaningful signal by now, but how much of the sky were searched already? how many old work units are there to be scanned, esc...

i feel that its important to keep us "little workers" here updated... it will be more motivating if we have some feedback to our work.

why there isn't a dedicated page just for progress updates? and if it is just to much of a technical problem, then can you please let us know when will you be able to check the progress and give us an update?

thank you for your time,

Avi Cohen.

All in due time. When this version of SETI started, the small team (about half a dozen) were busy transforming Classic to this version. They were also nearly out of money, so the basics were done, and none of the fancy things. As time went forward and this project went into full swing, they already were working on better scanning software, and gettting the old and new antennas online. The old antenna has been offline for almost 2 years (again lack of money to get it back online, and it has gone to a multibeam receiver which needed new software written). Then they had a fundraiser, which got them some needed funds, so the team got enhanced out the door, and are now out installing hardware and new software to both the antennas. Once this is done, they need to come back and write even newer software for the new multibeam and Astropulse antenna, so they can handle the data.

As you can see, it's been a busy couple of years. I know they want to make pages about interesting signals, and show all kinds of neat things, but alas time and money has not been on their side.

If you read future plans you can also get a jist on the amount of work they are doing.

I will answer this part..." how many old work units are there to be scanned, esc...". We are probably going to be redoing all of the old units because we have new software that looks much more indepth at the unit than the old software did. Therefore we could have "the" unit already and not even know it.
An analogy would be: a man looks at a piece of glass with the naked eye and says 'ummm smooth and solid'. A man with a microscope says 'ummm jagged and solid'. A person with a state of the art electron microscope says 'ummm, not only is it VERY jagged, its moving!' The better the tool the more you can see, the new "enhanced" software is better the old software be so the old units will need to be recrunched.
