I've been doing some seti enhanced beta work, so I know that a WU will take around 30-35 hours for me to finish. Net crunching time, that is. I'm the background cruncher type of guy, meaning that I only crunch when my PC is on, and my PC is only on when I'm using it. So I will take around a month to finish an enhance WU. Now I've gotten my first non-beta seti enhanced WU. And the report deadline is 9 days! I'll never meet such deadlines. I've even seen a message stating that you should think about energy consumption when crunching. Cool, I crunch in the background, I'm not the type of guy who buys 64 4-CPU servers and dedicate them for crunching, like some other people do, so my kind of crunching is like the one originally thought into this solution; your PC is on, so why not let it crunch, so that the energy and empty CPU cycles are not wasted. I'm an environmental cruncher! And now this tight deadline... I don't get it... Only server park cruncers are allowed now? So tell me this: Are you guys crazy, or did I miss the "backgrund crunchers: Please scram!" message? "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?" ![]() |

Martin, read the FAQ thread and look for an AR chart. There are different angle range WUs. Each AR takes a different amount of time to crunch. Some are short and some take a long time. The deadline changes accordingly. You should have no trouble making the deadline. Some testers are using PII's and PIII's and meeting the deadlines. Let her play out, you'll see it's OK. Unless ofcourse you only run 3 hours of the day or something. tony |

Or have a look at the "Still shorter deadlines..." thread. Grant Darwin NT |

Hi, and thanks for answering. I work with computers all day, and when I get home, I only do a minimum of computing on my personal system; 1 hour/day is the average, and some of it is gaming, where I have to disable BOINC due to performance issues. I've crunced 2% of the current enhanced WU, which took me around 10 minutes, extrapolating to 5mins/percent = 500mins/percent, or more than 8 hours pr WU. So now I can't leave my PC off for 2 days while crunching enhanced WU's - I'll be forced to turn my system on, only for the purpose of crunching. This points in the opposite direction from the energy consumption considerations found in the messages section these days. Go figure. "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?" ![]() |

Thanks for the hint - I'll move my rant to that thread. "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?" ![]() |

Going from the deadline and the time it took to crunch a 4.18 on your computer. You should just manage at one hour a day, but no shorter. But saying that it appears that most computers crunch the short ones quicker and the long ones slower than indicated in the 'Still shorter deadlines' thread. Andy |

You do realise that your pc under load uses more power than when it's idle, dont you? So strictly speaking there is no way of being "energy conservant" when it comes to SETI, as the only 2 scenarios that can happen are either 1) youre using your CPU for other things (gaming etc) in which case SETI gets no/very very little cpu time, or 2) youre not gaming but sitting on th desktop talking on MSN or whatever, in which case SETI is putting your cpu under full load, using more power. Infact the only thing I can think of that would constitute 'less' power consumption than gaming, would be the power consumption of the video card and more areas of the RAM.. So really, SETI is one big power wasting machine.. but we all still love it. Careface* |

You may want to let this one run before you draw too many conclusions. Some of the enhanced work units go twice as fast as 4.18 (which is why the shorter deadline still works). |
