OK, there are several shareware/freeware hardware diagnostic utilities available which will allow you to peek at the temperature sensors built in to your machine as it's running. I use Everest, they don't do a free version anymore but I think the personal version has a trial period. Someone else may pop in with a free alternative. Here's a link: http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=3&lang=en Keep in mind thermal problems can effect all major subsystems in the machine, ie CPU, Chipset, Memory, and/or Disk Storage (in the rough order of likelyhood), so you may have to get into specific subsystem diagnostics to isolate which one is giving you the problem. <Edit> First thing to check is to make sure there aren't a nest of "dust bunnies" inside. A simple but often forgotten easy thing to do. ;-) HTH, Alinator |

You can get a free program called speedfan here that can display temperatures and fan speeds. Best suggestion is clean out the heatsinks and dust. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

thanks, i installed Everest. it shows 40 degs C CPU and 53 geds C motherboard. will see if it will go up if my pc freeze or restart again. Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006. |

On most motherboards the temp sensor is in the northbridge, which handles all the high speed I/O including the memory. Some Northbridges get very hot, they are usually cooled with a heatsink sometimes with an attached fan. I have seen these fans stopped or broken which can cause lock ups or crashes, although in most of these cases in has been on games machines. Another source of heat in the northbridge, is if the graphics is on the motherboard, i.e. not separate card, then some makers have the graphics GPU in the northbridge. This is Intels way. |

Hmmm it is usualy from what I know the CPU should be hotter than the mainboard do not know, have to check with our sysop ...This is Intels way. it is HP d330 DT(DC580AV) ...First thing to check is to make sure there aren't a nest of "dust bunnies" inside. A simple but often forgotten easy thing to do. ;-) ok, will try to clean it (with our sysop :) ) and than will inform you about progress thanks all for now ;o) Crunching@Home since January 13 2000.
