Looking at the stats page, I noticed the rank is based on average credit and not total credit.

Maybe its just me, but that seems completely backwards.

not sure understanding the Q:

If you are on the stats page, do you click on the blue underlined
"total credit" link on the head? this will resort the display and showing the list from the total credits

I agree that the default should be ranked by total credits. The RAC is useful for determining who you are going to overtake, or who is going to overtake you.

Look in the directions for the web site...
A fast start is to go into the glossary and use the cross links from credit, average credit, etc. ...
