My computer is now crunching twice as many WU's per day as it was before, thanx to reading a recent thread on optimized science apps (Thanx! and thanx to PDB wiki on optimized science apps, etc ... made it very easy to install) A Question?... Will the credit score settle back to where it should be? I now take half as much time to do a WU, but my computer hasn't changed, how do the *benchmarks* work this out? It used to *ask* for c.30 credits per WU, now *asks* for c.15 - i've checked my recent results (Which makes sense as I'm doing twice as much work in the same time) ... but machine is still the same! I'm not a credit whore, I just don't know how this works. How does this work? |

A Question?... Will the credit score settle back to where it should be? I now take half as much time to do a WU, but my computer hasn't changed, how do the *benchmarks* work this out? There isn't a single "right" answer to this question... because of the "drop the highest and lowest claim" approach, your claim will now usually be the lowest, and be dropped, so you will get more credits than you are asking for. Whether this will come out to be "double" the amount per month or whatever than before, is pretty random. In general, I would say that you are going to get "more" credit than you were before, but not "twice as much", even though you are doing twice as many results. If you are doing _only_ SETI, then I would recommend an optimized BOINC Client, which will optimize the benchmarks to "match" the optimized science application. Then you will once again be asking for 30 credits each. But if you're doing other projects, then you'd be asking for too much credit on those, and we can spend all day discussing what is "fair" and what isn't, depending on _which_ projects, etc. But... the real answer is that SETI Enhanced (coming soon to a PC near you!) will do away with relying solely on the benchmarks, and will instead use a "flops-counting" approach. Hopefully this will happen soon enough that it's just not worth your effort to mess with an optimized Client, etc. Instead, compare how many credits you've earned per week or month or whatever _before_ you went with the optimized app, and check it again in another week or month and see if it's significantly better. I think it will be; if it's not enough to satisfy, and if you can't tell from these boards when the change to flops-counting will take place, then I'd look for an optimized Client. |
