I downloaded the new Seti-at-home (Boink), but have had nothing but frustration trying to use it with a Netzero dial-up Internet account. Boink always tries to automatically dial-up to access the Internet to get more work, but Netzero cannot be accessed that way (have to run their software to connect). Then if I try to stop the Boink software to get it to break the connection attempt (it's actually just getting the "If your trying to make a call, please hang up and try again" message from the operator), it just locks up, and I have to restart the computer to get it to stop dialing in. I found out through trial and error that I can "disable the Network access" with the Boink software, but then the only way that Boink can get more work is to "enable Network access" when I get online, keep checking to see if Boink has gotten more work and returned results (doesn't happen right away), and then remember to disable it again before I shut my computer down for the day, or it will be dialing and locking up my computer again the next time I boot it up. A royal pain in the butt! Was just going to go back to Seti-Classic, but then read that it is (or will soon be) discontinued. If there's no fix for this problem, I'm going to have to become an ex-Seti-at-home user.

The solution that you found, controlling network access from BOINC Manager, is the way to go. It didn't help that the servers were having problems with dropped connections on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, probably about when you were experimenting with it. Connections aren't usually that hard to get, once you're on line.

The only other information that may help you is to know that the next release of BOINC software, v. 5.2.x, had substantial improvements in the dial-up elements. It's due out any time now, I'd hope you'd give that a try before you drop the whole project.

If/when you make a post on any of these message boards and it doesn't go through right, there's a link that only you can see on your posts that says "edit this post", you can go in and fix whatever didn't happen right, and not have to create a new post. 8-)

Which I had to do, as I mis-remembered the exact wording of the message. <g> Good luck with NetZero, we'll be glad to try and help if you need it.
