I've been running SETI "Classic" for over six years now & I guess it's time to change to the BOINC software--I'm currently running a Dual 1G Mirror-Door Mac with Ubuntu 5.04, so I downloaded the 3rd party boinc & seti clients--My problem is that when I start the boinc client-I get this output--

2005-09-03 07:53:42 [---] Starting BOINC client version 4.27 for powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu
2005-09-03 07:53:42 [http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/] Using your default project prefs
2005-09-03 07:53:42 [SETI@home] Host ID is 1355439
2005-09-03 07:53:42 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults
2005-09-03 07:53:42 [SETI@home] Deferring communication with project for 23 hours, 42 minutes, and 32 seconds
2005-09-03 07:53:42 [SETI@home] Deferring communication with project for 23 hours, 42 minutes, and 32 seconds

I've gone to SETI & setup all my preferences (including the "general" ones)--I've verified my account is active--so what is up?

Also--I was using the gkrellm seti plug-in, is there a similar one for BOINC or do I need to think about coding one?

That is no problem, but why is it deferring the communication so long?

I'm in essentally the same boat as the original post. I just started processing under BOINC last night after years on Classic SETI and it looks like it's doing some kind of second pass on the same packet (more reading required here). I have reset the project. That along with the update seems to have uploaded my preferences, though I can not get them to display when I hit the button on the projects tab. They are available from the web site.

2005-09-04 10:39:41 [SETI@home] Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
2005-09-04 10:39:41 [SETI@home] General preferences have been updated
2005-09-04 10:39:41 [---] General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 2005-09-04 10:38:11)
2005-09-04 10:39:41 [---] General prefs: using your defaults

Maybe after the first packet is returned this will clear up?

I've reset twice & both times it has "defered communication" starting with slightly less that 24hrs--I also joined Einstein@home & it is doing the same thing--

Think there is a problem with powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu? I found the link for this on the SETI site--listed as "third-party" software--

Maybe you should try (compile) a newer version of BOINC.

Well--I'll wait til this "waiting" period is thru & if it goes into another cycle---I'll download & compile--any choices for PPC G4/Debian Linux "better" than others?

[solution]

I've had similar problem, using ubuntu-ppc, by following steps:

a) downloaded and compiled both client and seti app
b) launched boinc client, registered to project, waited for benchmark, closed
c) placed seti app and app_info.xml in a newly created folder [<working folder>/Projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/]
d) launched boinc client, experienced "every time 24h delay"

My way to fix it:

e) stop the client, delete all files in boinc working folder !!!BUT NOT the "Projects" folder!!!
f) launch boinc client and register to project again

After following steps everything was ok.

In future, if anything fails in a simmilar manner, just follow these two steps:

1) clear the boinc working directory
2) proceed with b)-f) and everything will get normal
