I ran boinc and downloaded about 10 work units for my laptop. I ran them offline but when I returned home and booted my machine, all the work units (completed and those not yet run) were GONE! Not a trace of them in boinc... before this boinc was complaining about inability to access a state file etc. (this happened after I was once forced to quit windows with power-off).

The windows file system does not like having the power turned off without a normal shutdown. The windows file system uses lazy writes, and the data on the disk may not match the current state of affairs before the power was turned off. The root cause of the trouble was the power off, not anything BOINC did.
