My computer won't sleep since I installed boinc... is that something I give up with using boinc? I'm running 10.4

I believe so. Your Mac will only go to sleep when it is not in use. Running SETI work units keeps it in use therefore it won't go to sleep automatically. You could put it to sleep manually if you wish.
