Ever since BOINC 4.43 upgraded SETI to 4.18 on my dual 2gh G5 with 2.5gb of ram and running OS X 10.4.2, I have experienced hard crashes of my computer. I am not talking about a program crash, where I can do a forced quit and restart the program. We are talking total lockup of the system where nothing short of holding down the power button for 6 second will be recognized. This happens, any where from once a day to once a week or longer. The only sign of trouble, is the cooling fans reving up to nearlly top speed. The program seem to be working correctly, except for the crashes. I have nearly 19,000 credits. Normal screen saver grapics. Is any one else having this problem? I have trashed and re-installed 4.43 2 times with out fixing this. |

pixzy, Your problem may not be BOINC itself, but temperature. Tiger is pretty good at shutting everything down and speed up fans to their maximum speed at the slightest sign of trouble. This is a topic widely discussed in the apple forums. If you haven't had any crashes prior to installing BOINC I'd say that's the cause of your problems. You can quickly test this theory by setting the air conditioning at a much lower temperature than you usually have it for a couple of days, and see if during those couple of days you have any crashes. I hope this helps, Julian |

pixzy, You may have something here Julian, I updated to Tiger about the same time that BOINC updated the SETI client. Can you post a link to the Apple forum that covers this? I couldn't find it. In the mean time, I have vecumed out my G5. Hope this helps untill we get a fix. Bob |
