WOW
It is surprising the amout of people there is running Linux (unix) to run BOINC.

I think this thread could be an interesting study in sociology. Most people responding to this here are running Linux and want to shout about it - good for them. However, this is not representative of the wider Boinc community. Boincstats indicates 88.5% Windows, 7.8% Linux, 3.1% Darwin and 0.6% others.

Asking somebody if they like something will be likely to illicit a much stronger response from those who do like it than those who have no preference, or even don't realise there is an alternative.

I currently run six boxes with XP and two on Mankdrake 10.1. I should add that a couple of my machines are owned by the childcare business run by my wife and that they have to be "standard" machines.

Erm... most people responding are responding because the thread author asked who was running what..... :)

Currently, I have a Dell SC420 server running FC3 that's crunching. And might I add, starting to blow the doors off of my two Windows pc's (WinXP that I can't change, and Win2k that my wife won't let me change over). The server is running Metod's optimized software. The other two are running stock software.

Out of 11 boxes in the house, of which only 3 are Microshaft, I run Tinysofa on a few of the "classic workhorse" 1600R Proliants along with TurboLinux, Mandrake, FC3, and Gentoo on the rest of the boxes (POS PC's).

The kicker... I only run Boinc on the M$ boxes! I've yet to see a stock or optimized client that works well on Linux yet. My 1600's are Dual 500's, 550's and 600's repectively and when compling the stock or optimized clients, it would literally take over ONE WEE FOR ONE WU! Way to rediculous for me.

That said, my M$ boxes are my big boxes anyway (2.8, 2.93, and 3.08 GHz with 1MB L2 cache). These are the ones that are going to produce the big results. I'd like to be able to put my Linux boxes to work in some fashion or another.... just not gonna happen yet.... so until then I have to say the Windows Client is my ver of (not by) choice.

I do BOINC on 8 computers right now, 7 Windows and one PowerMac.

As I continue the migration of equipment I plan to take the slowest machine (after I get everthing settled) and will turn that into a Linux machine so I can see if I can start to document the same stuff for Linux that I do for Windows.

But, like the OS-X stuff, it takes a back seat to trying to document where it can serve the most people at one swell foop ...

For people that do not like Microsoft they use various alternate spellings using the dollar sign in place of an "s".

3 Linux Boxes (Fedora Core)
1 Win2K
2 WinXP

As of now :

2x WinNT for Alpha
2x Win2000 Prof.
1x WinXP
3x Unix (SGI Irix 6.5)
16x Linux (x86 and x86_64)

I really miss my SGI workstations (had two dual proc Octanes, and a number of O2's). My O2's were hideously slow though on classic taking about 16-18h per unit.

And NT/Alpha - there's a man with a sense of adventure :)
