Have run SETI for years with 22 units complete. Installed Boinc first time (new) 4.5. Have followed install steps, benchmarks, etc. I have attached SETI as project but don't want to download any more WU's until current SETI classic is finished. When CPU idle and Boinc screen saver selected, only Boinc sceensaver appears and SETI does not run. I want to complete my current SETI work unit which is about 1/2 finished. SETI runs OK when I select it as screen saver. Help. W98 SE P4 2.4 GH |

You have canceled all your WUs for Boinc and Boinc will not run Classic.... OK, create a file called stop_after_send.txt in the classic S@H directory. It will allow your computer to complete the current classic WU and report it. At that point, you can turn on BOINC. 22 WUs over several years? BOINC has a deadline of 2 weeks on each WU. BOINC WIKI |

Then BOINC won't get much from my computer! I thought it would run only when my computer was idle as does Classic SETI. Fred |

It would be a waste of storage space on the SETI servers if they didn't have some limit on the time it takes to get a result back. Two weeks is more than adequate. If a result is not received after two weeks it is sent out to another host. Once enough results are received for a workunit and it has been validated and credit granted, credit will not be given to any results that are late. After two more weeks the result is moved to another server and deleted off the main server. |

Then BOINC won't get much from my computer! I thought it would run only when my computer was idle as does Classic SETI. That depends on the definition of "idle". Boinc uses otherwise unused CPU time. It's designed to run always on lowest priority, and keep your CPU (nearly) always on 100% load. Other programs are not affected, because of it's low priority, but as you usually only use a puter for some wee percents, it will get it's share. It can afaik as well be run in "screensaver mode" (run when no work is done), but that's a waste of cycles imho. Gruesse vom Saenger For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki |

Sorry to butt in on this stream guys but I have just come over (or out as some refer to it) from Classic to Boinc. I have a couple questions. I used to run commandline (screensaver p**sed me off) and as my "puta" was on all daya everyday and idel at lot, set at low I churned through the workunits. (a) So will Boinx work in a similiar fashion to the old command line (b) I used to have 3 units going at once (c) I have turned on run all the time from Boinc Manager but by default is this "low" CPU usage in terms of the old method ? Thanks Guys Ray |

Sorry to butt in on this stream guys but I have just come over (or out as some refer to it) from Classic to Boinc. Hey Ray, and welcome to BOINC. There are differences from Classic and as long as you are fine with that, the transition isn't too bad. The first thing to remember is that BOINC tells SETI when to d/l and u/l work, and how much, it will also tell any other project that you chose to work on how much work to get, and when to do WUs of each type. So, now to answer your questions: a)SETI works like a command line, runs in the background no graphics unless you ask for them. BUT there is an interface to see which units you have downloaded, when they're due, etc. This is the BOINC manager, and it can be compared to SETISpy b)In BOINC, you should only have 1 unit running per CPU. If you have virtual hyper threading, you can do that, but it's generally more efficient to dedicate your CPU to 1 unit at a time. c) This is basically take cycles only if they would otherwise go to the Idle process. You can also set this in your online preferences. If you have anymore questions (and most people do) you should take a look at Paul's BOINC-Wiki. Almost everything you want to know is there. Once again, welcome!!! |

(c) I have turned on run all the time from Boinc Manager but by default is this "low" CPU usage in terms of the old method ? Actually, the developers have figured out how to get the BOINC science applications to run at a lower priority than S@H classic ran, so there should be less of a problem. BOINC WIKI |
