In the classic client there was a switch which requested output be sent to stdout during the processing of a workunit, "-verbose," as in "./setiathome -verbose." This was useful because I could just look at the terminal and know that something was happening.

Is there an equivalent switch in the BOINC version (4.43 for i686-pc-linux-gnu)?

It does that by default. There is a switch [ -redirectio ] to instead send info to the log files.
