At the bottom of this page it says clickhere to merge this computer. What is that for? What is being merged?

Sometimes , especially after an update, an uninstall/install (for whatever reason) or a detach/reattach, your computer doubles in the database.
To keep it neat and small, you can merge those doubles to one. You can also wait for the last result to be purged, and delete the virtually retired one (sometimes necessary after an OS-update), but usually merging helps.

BTW:
The (very good) manual for Boinc is the BOINC Powered Projects Documentation by Paul D. Buck and the BoincWiki therein.

Thanks for the info and the fantastic link. So bottom, unless my computers start duplicating themselves in the databse, this function will not be necessary.
