I used the former seti@home program for a long time with no problems.
I have an out of date computer (duron 600MHz, 256MB Ram and win98se), but the old program never compromised my machine performance.
My computer stays On only when I'm using it, so I've left the seti program always running.
With the Boinc (version 4.45) I' can't use my machine and the program at the same time. It seems to me that its consumming all of my cpu power.
I've looked at the preferences to find a way of diminishing this hunger for resources but didn't find an answer.
To run it as only a screensaver its not the answer as I already told I'm always using the computer when is On. The screensaver starts rarely.
There is a way off solving this problem?
I dont want to stop to contribute to Seti@home but with this program I'll be not able to do it.

Try setting this in your general preferences. "Do work while computer is in use? no"

Well you might have already tried this, but did you try to use ThreadMaster with BOINC? It might help you with your CPU problem. I'm not sure if it will work with a Win 98 box though.

I looked at the site of Tread Master and found that the program works only on win 2k and above. I'm planning to upgrade my machine and my OS but it will take a while.

As I said before this is not an answer because when my computer is On I'm always using it, so if I set this option the Boinc will never start. The Boinc is turned off at my computer and will stay in this condition until I get a solution.
Anyway thanks for your answers.

Hello Rick,

this is the way it's supposed to work: get all of your otherwise unused CPU cycles and keep it busy at 100%. As it runs at a very low priority, it should not interfere with other programms.

OK, my machine is a bit faster and newer, but even while I do some CPU intense things (picture editing, CD-ripping (legally bought ;)) I've never had to close down Boinc.

For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki

I've had similar experience. I leave BOINC running all the time. When I play a game, or render 3D graphics, BOINC is very good at getting out of the way.

At the first time it apears that will work exactly how you are saying, but after a while every program I want to use starts to freeze or have poor performance.
When I keep trying to use the program the computer freezed and I have to power it off.
By the way I'm also playing a game and 3d rendering program (blender) when the problem arised. I mean one of then each time (1st the game then the 3d program).

in the preferances section try changing the "use no more than xx% of virtual memory" to somthing lower as it could be because boinc is hogging the virtual memory.... mine is set at 50% and works fine unless i am doing a very memory intensive operatoion (like 3d graphics etc.) then i temperarly disable boinic (from boinc maneger)
any higher and it starts to crash my programes.. my machine is of simalar specs, (800MHz celeron, 128 PC100 RAM, 20GB HD)
