There are some around but its patchy.

One of my computers managed to pick up a couple of days worth about an hour ago but I've just let another log on and its back to no units available.

Just got to keep on trying. Easy for me to say cause I'm on broadband. It must be really frustrating for those with a modem.

It's not that hard. You learn to start downloads, go somewhere else for awhile and then come back to see if it's done.

My box was sitting on over 25 WU to hand in last night, today it's crunching on about 10.

I am getting a pile of WU's about every 8 hours or so.

Yes, so am I on Broadband, it can be trying at times but if I keep at it I will eventually get more WU's ...

I had the same problem, so I forced project updates, monitoring the messages in between, getting "No work available, when on the last update the data server suddenly parted with 9 WUs. Interesting how it can go from no work available to suddenly downloading 9 WUs.

Does anyone know if reducing the work preference cache actually increase the odds of getting WUs. Maybe the data server holds off on filling a WU cache order until it has enough WUs available; not downloading any partial orders. The larger the order, the harder it is to fill, especially with Berkeley having trouble keeping up with demand.

Try reducing the size of your work preference cache and see if that makes it easier to get WUs. A few WUs beats none at all.

A little trick that seems to work for me is to keep forcing a update until it's say's something like 10 min's until the next try. It seems if I stop forcing the updates when I see that message that I will get some WU's after the 10 min's. That doesn't work every time but it works enough for me that I keep enough work units cached that way to keep running the Project ...

Actually, I've been using 56k dial up without much of a problem, so long as the data server is working. I use the "Disable BOINC network access" function to control BOINC when the system is off line. When it's time, I simply go on line, enable BOINCs network access, let it do it's business (as long as the data server is operational)and then disable the network access again when done.

The WU situation wasn't that bad until the demand suddenly increased beyond Berkeley's initial capacity to keep up with it. I'm not a competitive number cruncher, just someone who wants to contribute to the search.

One of our splitters had died because the *nix machine hosting it had run out of swap space. We have fixed that problem, so handing out new results should continue on as before.

Thankyou Rom for information

if hardware is failing no setting on client side will help.

Everything runs smooth, PoorBoy's hint can realy help.

I'm not sure if it's just luck or Zufall, but when PoorBoy's mentioned hint
is not working, I went to the account page, changed "anything" in the profile of home/shool/work, made update and then updated the client.
This helped me more than one time, but can also be coincidence..

I've been having some problems as well getting WU's but they seem to come in bunches. My clients will go for a long time with no work from S@H then will fill the queue. Prob still just working out the bugs.

PoorBoy's method has also served me well in the past. I have some rather fast computers, so I tend to keep my cache settings rather large (10-12 days worth), so when the server says "no work available", there is plenty of time to refill the cache before I run out of work. But then, all of my computers except for one are totally dedicated to the SETI project, and my main machine runs the client continuously until whatever I am working on starts to lag, at which time I shut down the client until I am finished working or gaming. Happy Crunching...

Regards, Daniel.

I'm the same way Daniel, I run Seti exclusively if at all possible. I don't have near the PC's you have but I still need 30-35 WU's a day to keep my 3 PC's running. In a few weeks I will probably need 50 a day when I add another hungry mouth to the Stable ... I try to keep 7-8 Days of WU Cached in case there's a problem with the server & we can't get any for a few days...

Well, I guess I'm pretty lucky, PoorBoy, in that I work for an ISP/Computer repair/computer builder/computer seller shop, so I get pretty good prices on hardware. Computers are my hobby, so working where I do is kind of like an alcoholic working in a distillery :) As far as joining your team, I already belong to my Company's team. We have been expanding, and adding new services such as Wireless Broadband Internet, that the rest of my team mates have not yet had the time to switch over to Boinc from Seti Classic yet, but thanks anyway for the invitation...

Regards, Daniel.
