I want to also enlist the "power" of an old PC running win98. Installing the optimised 445 BOINC client failed due to msising libraries (msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll). Locating these and copying these into the diectory resulted in a segfault/GPF.

Downloading the standard boinc client resulted in the requirement that I need IE 5 or higher for installation to proceed. I have the vanilla IE 4.0 on this box, actually use Firefox and have no intention of downloading MS latest browser only to install boinc.

I suspect that boinc wants certain dll's for the networking. Anybody who can offer advice on how to get the optimised (cli-version) or full boinv 4.45 to work.
Thanks.

Yep Load Linux and be done with it... :)

I'm running the MMX optimised 443 BOINC client on Win95 in that fashion, no problems. I have the boinc-445-mmx.zip file but want to let the current WU complete before trying to switch.

Downloading the standard boinc client resulted in the requirement that I need IE 5 or higher for installation to proceed. I have the vanilla IE 4.0 on this box, actually use Firefox and have no intention of downloading MS latest browser only to install boinc.

I have _no_ IE on my system, haven't since 1997. It's really discouraging to try that full install, have it quit saying that it hasn't modified the system, and find 4 MB of garbage it left behind. I don't blame the BOINC project for using the installer Microsoft contributed, but they should provide alternatives for those who can't use it.

I don't think that's it, I'm still on Winsock 1 and boinc communications are working OK. Could you be using a client optimized for more than your processor actually supports?
