Just wondering if there will be an optimsed 64 bit version for the new cpu's and windows 64-Bit is not going to get you anything with most of the projects in hand today. Nor any comming down the road ... Pending takes from 2 hours to about a week to start to flow, then you will have credit coming in a stream always lagging by a few days ... if you go to a stats site and look at peoples monthly stats you can see what they are doing over several days time ... I do between 600-3500 a day, mostly because of projects going in and out and waiting on others ... |

You can run the 32-bit optimized clients with NO problems. |

Just wondering if there will be an optimsed 64 bit version for the new cpu's and windows I agree. We've built 32-bit and 64-bit AMD clients for linux, and the 32-bit clients are way faster at the moment. This is most likely due to the relatively early release nature of the x86-64 compiler. I'm not aware of a 64-bit compiler for windows yet, and you can't build 64-bit apps without 64-bit tools. When 64-bit compilers for windows are available it's likely to be the same story as with linux. It will take time for the tools to develop and you can't expect new tools to instantly be faster than tools that have been highly developed over a relatively long period of time. I guess it will be quite some time before we are genuinely able to see what benefits 64-bit clients have to offer. Just my opinion! I guess it will be quite some time before we are genuinely able to see what benefits 64-bit clients have to offer. I am not a developer, so I don't know for sure. But from what I heard, the whole point of 64-bitness of Intel and AMD processors is in the width of registers, nothing more. That would mean one could do integer arithmetics on 64-bit words without much hassle and one could use 64-bit address space flat. Nothing about faster processing of FP data or vector arithmetics (the former is 64 to 80 bit for ages and the later is 128 bit in SSE2 if I'm not mistaken). The whole thing (like 64-bit being faster) seems a big hype when it comes to ordinary users running normal software. Metod ... |

^^ I should have said _may_ have to offer, if any at all :) *** My Guide to Compiling Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients *** *** Download Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients for Linux Here *** |

I know from the Linux world that native 64-bit installations (OS and app) seem to benefit (in a small way) Apache and MySQL, and other database-type applications, but do next to nothing for normal "workstation" apps. So although I have a fair bit of 64-bit kit here I can't see any massive benefit to a DC project even when the compiler and OS technologies mature. *EDIT* Ned's 32 bit clients fly on 64-bit Fedora installations though :) |

Hi Lowfield :) Have you tried the new amd64 client yet (also 32-bit) - that one really flies :D Ned *** My Guide to Compiling Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients *** *** Download Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients for Linux Here *** |
