[sarcasm mode on]

Just thought I'd start yet another thread related to the outage. I just don't think 10 of them is enough for me. I feel the need to read more of the same stuff on yet another thread.

Why? you ask. I guess I'm just in the mood to do so, and because I'm to lazy to read any of the others before starting this thread.
[sarcasm mode OFF]

Please don't respond, I'm just ranting.

argggggh

I don't know why I posted this. This same thing happens every time. you'd think I'd be used to it by now.

The file server containing the upload/download storage hung last evening. We had to power cycle it today to bring it back. It is now back up and the RAID is resync'ing. When this is complete we will bring scheduling and data service back on line.

===============================

Don't let the slash-dotter's know about this; they will claim the cause was Microsoft Server and rant that Linux is the only solution.

Some people seem to believe that S@H crunchers should just accept downtime, however frequent, however long, and not ask questions like "Anyone know what's the problem?", "Any ideas when it will be fixed?", and "Why does this keep happening?". Strange attitude, especially when there is often no official news until it's eventually been resolved, and the same problems keep arising. Many of the complaints are not from newbies but from long-suffering crunchers whose faces bear the deep scars of frustration!

Try this analogy:
You're a skateboarder who keeps falling off injuring yourself, what do you do...?

a) Treat the blood, sweat and tears as 'character-building'? The more it hurts, the more it must be getting you somewhere, right?
b) Buy a crash-helmet, elbow-pads and knee-pads, ask a friend for some advice on how to avoid falling off so often, and if necessary buy/beg/borrow a safer skateboard?
c) Give up skateboarding and settle for something a little less dangerous?

-----

@ Whiners - be more constructive.
@ anti-Whiners - be more constructive.
@ SETI Team - keep up the good/hard work, and keep us informed.
@ Everyone - keep asking questions, keep searching for answers. Why else are we here?

Stepping off the soap-box now.
Happy crunching!

I'm sure a couple people think that. I'm not one of them. I think people should look at existing threads to see if one already addresses the issue prior to creating a new one. for example, Matt Lebofsky (project developer) wanted to post to the issue about what was wrong, what was being done, and so forth. He picked one thread and posted it. In the other threads, they didn't keep reading all of them, so they weren't informed. He even explained why it couldn't be posted to the front page. Still, the people in other threads complained "we weren't informed". If the number of threads about the outage were kept down to a reasonable number than almost everyone would have seen it.

My gripe is about the quantity of threads related to the same subject.

Sure, there are a couple threads which address different aspects of the outage and I have no problem with them.

I totally agree with this.
But maybe the much people should reduce the risk of no work by itself so much they can. Increase sice of cache and so on.
I´m running Seti over four years now and boincing over two years and there are allwyas reasons enough for an unexpected outage.

greetz and respectful from Germany
