just found this in a German Internetside

a Babelfish Translation

The Netherlands astronomy combination ASTRON presented in the past year the announced new system on Tuesday for the study of space of the public. The system consists of a network of radio antennas, the “Low in such a way specified frequency array” (LOFAR), as well as a model from IBMs supercomputer series Blue genes, which is set up in the computing centre of the university by Groningen.

LOFAR can receive approximately 25,000 radio antennas of signals with its from more than 13 billion light-years distance. The data are led by optical waveguide cables to the computing centre and linked and analyzed by the IBM computer. Scientists expect from the data further realizations over the origin of the universe. Per second data result up to 800 Gigabit. The Blue gene system is to be taken according to IBM 2006 in enterprise and be used by a consortium consisting of universities, research establishments and enterprises.

To IBM data the supercomputer with its comes approximately 12,000 power PC CCUs in the Linpack bench mark on 27,4 Teraflop/s, which could be enough in the new Top500-Liste of of the fastest supercomputers, which is updated in June, for a place under the first ten. The fastest computer of the world is at present the IBM model BlueGene/L, which is used with 70,72 Teraflop/s for the protein research.

The fastest computer of Europe, the system MareNostrum likewise developed by IBM, stands according to current Top500-Liste at present in Spain. Whom the arithmetic performances of the own system are not sufficient, computing time on Blue gene racks can in all other respects rent at IBM since short. The connection to the again opened high speed computing centre for Supercomputing in smelling ester (the USA) is made by main line train reef over a Virtual private network.

Thanks Sir Ulli. I'm hopeful that this project will contribute to us understanding a little more about the formation of the universe in its earlier stages.

And hi terrorhertz!
