I know nothing about linux good start??! anyway i was think how about a Lan based linux dist with Boinc being the only app for the likes of me who run PC's just for Boinc, that way i can save having that Hard drive spinning all the time (USB or floppy dist??????) must be easy to install for us poor win32 geeks (No g45475.nr.gz.tar.etc!!! totally don't get all that stuff

Running knoppix off a CD and having boinc on a USB flashdrive might be the easy answer for you.
