I am pleased to announce that the new client is ready for those who want to Beta test the client. We are down to just a few bugs that need to be fixed before we can release to the world, but given the usage numbers, we would like to get some more coverage on a broader selection of machines. If all goes well, we'll be releasing the Windows client in the next week or two. We have also started to use a bug tracking service that is publicly available. You can sign-up and track the progress of a bug that you are concerned about through email or the website. Or you can add any additional information you have about a bug. Feel free to check it out at: http://bbugs.axpr.net/index.php Thanks in advance. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

Are improvements to dial-up users incorporated yet, I would like to allow BONIC to upload/download at will. |

Rom has moved it from the Developmental page, to the Main dowload page. Remember it's still developmental, contains bugs, so, user beware. tony |

I am running 98SE 2.0 GHZ celeron 256 meg of Ram and a 120G and a 20G harddrive. At first 4.24 seemed to be a good program...until about 20 minutes ago when I noticed that it was frozen. I closed it down and restarted it and it was still frozen. It would start but would stop responding before I could see any of the messages or anything else would display. So I reinstalled it (4.19 would freeze like this and a reinstall would cure it) This did not help in fact the computer froze up. I restarted the computer and it froze again. At this point I got into safe mode and uninstalled 4.24. I then installed 4.19 and it is working fine. |

The hanging/freezing was because it couldn't connect to my changed DNS. See threads "memory requirements" and "DNS problem using dial up". By setting my client to "disable network access" my client stopped freezing until I had work to report that is. There's much more to add, so just read those threads and see if it doesn't sound like what you've experienced. tony |

Tony, Is this something that is a format that would make sense adding to the Problems section of the FAQ? Or will I have to spend 3 weeks figuring it out? |

I haven't implemented the "fix" yet. I've been having this freeze/lock up since November. I've been just nursing it along. I'm glad someone has the answer. I started listing my problem in the Thread "memory requirements" by MattDavis. You can read the whole troubleshooting process if you're really bored. lol Once I try it, I'll respond back to the DNS thread with the result. tony |

I've read Walt's response to Tony's problem, and I'm really impressed that he caught that -- I do IP networking all day, and it's not something that anyone would easily catch. Tony has a wireless router that he's using as an access point -- he's not actually connected to the rest of the world through it. ... but the router thinks that is what it's doing, so it says that it is the gateway to the rest of the world, and the DHCP server is giving out DNS servers based on the router being the gateway. This isn't the same problem that others are having, where DNS failures are coming back before the dialup connection is established. In fact, we may never see Tony's problem again, just because his setup is a little unusual. |

Hmm, Question I asked: Are improvements to dial-up users incorporated yet, I would like to allow BONIC to upload/download at will. The only one to answer, replied: As long as "Disable BOINC network access" isn't selected, then that's what it will do. Grant Darwin NT. I wish to thank Grant for taking the time to answer my question, I can't say I am sure what his answer means however. I suppose it boils down to yes if you let bonic upload/download at its own pace the client will tie up my phone until I tell it to stop. Perhaps I was not clear enough: Will bonic ever incorporate any improvements to dialup performance?. I.E. longer time between request for conncection and failure and hang up of modem. Or, longer time between attempts, say one hour minimum? This project's name is after all SETI@HOME. Not seti@youbetterhaveatleastadslconnectiontoallowthisclienttoworkproperly Thanks |
