Your computer will send the WU back, when it decides: 'I don't have enough to crunch on for the next XX days, so let's get some work.'
You can speed it up by rightclickink on the project in the project-tab and chose 'Update'.
A good manual for Boinc is Paul D. Bucks BOINC Powered Projects Documentation and his FAQ therein.
