Hi all.

Since the database is running too slow ATM I'd suggest to the folks at Berkeley to
switch off anything that isn't needed for uploading/downloading WU's.

The validator hopefully will catch up on the new hardware.

Regards Hans

Now they are telling us their computer can't get access because people like you and I are trying to get in! Seems like a no brainer to me....shut us out until you get more units available to crunch. The quote from the main page says "February 4, 2005
We will restart the database migration to the new hardware Monday, January 7, at 18:00 UT. The outage will be several hours long. Currently, workunit production is falling behind demand. The splitters themselves are able to keep up but are not able to insert work fast enough because of competition for database access."
Well duuuuuhhhh...just disable our access and enable yours. You can even do it once an hour so we can still download units and you can create new ones AND you can send them to the proper place WITHOUT us interfering!!!
Sometimes it seems like they try too hard to keep us happy! Just do what you must, just tell us what you are doing! MOST of us will understand!!! And those that don't, they will always find SOMETHING to complain about no matter what the situation is!!!

I have to agree with Hans - shutting down the validator is the logical way to proceed. The validator is effectively doing nothing right now and shutting it down would take some of the pressure of the database - hopefully allowing the splitters to get ahead again.

Maybe the transitioner is another candidate for shut-down.

Be lucky

Neil
