I've just installed BOINC for SETI@HOME on Windows XP
My setting of 'yes' for the above is being ignored and BOINC is connecting automatically without any confirmation.

Yes, it does this. It's still not very happy with dialup accounts. :(

The only surefire way to ensure it doesn't dial, is to check "Disable BOINC network access" under the "File" menu. Of course, you need to remember to turn this back on when you want to get more work.

If I check "Disable BOINC network access", BOINC doesn't remember this option. When I close and restart it, or I reboot the computer, this option is always unchecked, and I have to check it everytime. It is a little bit uncomfortable...

This gives me a problem as well. I brought it up in Beta but had no answer and I can't see it listed on the database for attention. Seems like a potential security issue to me to dial someones computer up without permission??? Also costly for some people who pay by the minute.

Yes, it also does this...

There are still many problems that weren't fixed in beta.

I agree. This is a serious problem for some users. It should be fixed asap.

I've got the same problem Roy, Yesterday I found that Boinc had dialled up whilst I was out! I have now uninstalled it and gone back to the safer classic Seti@home until a newer version irons this problem out.
I have reported this problem. Best of luck

I also have this annoyance.

Would have thought this could have been easily implemented via a command line parameter, something like "C:Program FilesBOINCboinc_gui.exe" -disable_net (obviously change pathname as appropriate for whatever operating system in use), which if present immediately 'ticks' the option off.

Ideally, but also the more time consummingly (coding + testing), would be to set this off automatically if the applicable preference setting for "Confirm before connecting to Internet" is set to Yes (or alternatively, remember what state it was in when the program last closed, but personally think the if-yes-then-toggle-net-access-off method the better).

This is a very annoying problem, especially since I just uninstalled the classic version of Seti@Home on both of my computers. Since the problem was first reported in June and a new verson of BOINC was released on 13 July, why wasn't the dial-up problem addressed in the newest release?

The problem wasn't first reported in June. The problem has been known since beta.

As to why it hasn't been fixed, I can give two likely candidates, pick whichever you prefer.

1- They can't quite pin down why this is happening, so they haven't been able to fix it.

2- Dial up users are regarded as low priority with the developers, and more important concerns are being addressed.

I'm finding it's ignoring my preference for asking me before dialing as well. But it's not such a biggy as it also disconnects itself after it has done what it needs to. It's just a little annoying. There's bound to be some bugs with a new system.

To Re-Set the "Disable BOINC NetWork Access" - Option at BOINC-Startup,
take a look at the following thread:

I'm running SAH BOINC 3.08/3.20 w/ XP Home. Dialup automatically was working fine, but when my dialer disconnects it prompts to reconnect. This puts everything including SAH BOINC on hold waiting for a response from me. Changing my preferences for BOINC to promt before connecting causes my dialer to prompt me and everything is again on hold. The fix for me was to uncheck SET AS DEFAULT on my dialup connection.

SAH BOINC apparently can't dial in if there is no default connection.

Hope this helps. DMWorrel

You can set your computer preferances to prevent your computer from ever dialing automatically.

Go into the Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections and check never dial a connection.

Your computer will not dial automatically from now on for any program. This stops all programs from auto dialing, including spyware and viruses as well as Boinc.

Rather than echo all the above. I'm only using seti thru boinc.
if boinc wants to be used in lieu of seti classic, they really should take and make this fix a priority. Since there is no mention of a fix in this thread. I'll be returning to seti classic until I see boinc's config settings do as they are set.

Maybe there's a newsletter that will address this fix if they want boinc to be used ?

I like the idea fine of having a cache of data to handle vs 1 shot at a time with classic.

There is a workaround. If you disable network access through the BOINC GUI, that works, and with 4.25, the setting sticks on startup as well.
