Hi Lars, 10.20: Since HPUX 10.20 is completely out of extended support, hopefully demand for that will be pretty low. Although I know some old shops still running it because they have to. Those guys are pretty nervous about it, so I'd imagine not real interested in BOINC... If you need a tester, I'm sure I could dig up an old box... wxWidgets: What is that? If you can let me know what it is or what it's used for, I'll see if I can find more info. Thanks Lars, /temple |

Hello Dean !
I have it also seen/heard from several sources, some would/could not migrate to 11.x. So I thougt I post it here, in the hope that if someone need 10.20 binaries replies. Dean, what do you think, should we wait, if there will someone request 10.20 binaries, or should we start it with a low priority ? - I am not shure, but i have the impresion, that 10.20 need a completly recompile. - Also I am not shure if the 11.0 binaries will run on 10.20. And if the seti enhanced comes, 10.20 should recompiled agiain, to my tendence is to wait for a request... If Eric releases the new seti enhanced, I wan't to release binaries for HPUX ASAP. I am in testings of the seti enhanced (seti beta project) in the moment on PARISC, looks good in the moment.... Also, I was able to compile the wxWidgets and the boinc manager. I hope, that I can release a binary soon. |

Hello Dean ! Hi Dotsch! Nice to read that you compiled wxWidgets for HP-UX! Congratulation. I finally go to upgrade all my clients to last your version. I will keep you posted. Version 10.20 is obsoleted by us, we already obsoleted 99% of the 10.20in the this year and still some old boxes are going to be obsoleted soon. Version 11.11 for PA-RISC2.0 will live for some time from now, probably long. |

If someone are interested on the boinc manager or the wxWidgets, I can put both prerelease to a webserver. The both packages are only tested on my 11i system in the moment. Also made a request to the HPUX Software Porting Centre for adding my wxWidgets package... I have uploaded the HPUX11.0 binaries (32 and 64 bit) and the 11i PARISC boinc client with the fixed memory detection, temporarly to my webserver (www.dotsch.de/seti/hpux). They will be available till Stefan has time to upload it to his webserver. |

Stefan has uploaded the newest HPUX binaries on his site (http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml). In the new release 1.7.1, I have changed the boinc client to 4.72. The seti app are still the same, like on the previos releases. Also some changes in the documentations. There are now binaries for HPUX 11.0 (32 and 64 bit) and HPUX 11i on PARISC (11.11 and 11.23) and IA64 (only 64 bit) for 11.2x. If you have 11i, I recommend you to use the 11i binaries. The 11.0 seti app is 10 % slower than the 11i binaries. There is also the boinc manager (GUI) for HPUX 11i PARISC available. It should run on PARISC 11i and IA64 11i. But I have only tested it on 11.11 on PARISC. The boinc mangager requires some additional libs which are not included in the depot file. The requirements are listed in /opt/boinc/doc/install.boincmgr. |

I have compiled binaries for the seti@home beta project for HPUX 11i on PARISC 64 Bit. The Seti@home Beta project is the test project for the next release of the seti@home application (aka seti enhanced). It it about 10 to 12 times sensitiver than the actual production release. But it need about 8 to 12 times longer to compute. If someone interested to participate the seti@home beta project, and need the HPUX binaries, please contact me via email (seti_boinc@dotsch.de). The project is beta. So it is recommended to check regulary the project site for new releases. If new releases will be made, the users sometimes must abort the work, and use the new binaires. - But in such a case, there is a little delay on HPUX, till I have compiled the new sources.... |

My C3600/552 Mhz is now running the latest BOINC-Software 1.7.1, using HP-UX 11.11i V1. Although I downloaded some of the newest patch-packages (November 2005) I needed to install patches PHCO_31903, PHKL_32647 and PHSS_30970 to make the application work. 388 Whetstone and 1003 Dhrystone are not pretty much compared with 995 Whetstone and 3097 Dhrystone of my PowerMac G5 1,8 Ghz FSB 600, but on a 24-hour-base it should be enough to complete workunits within the time limit. And now there's a new problem at the end of this Sunday full of "patch-work": "Message from server: platform 'hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.11' not found." What to do now ? |

Although I downloaded some of the newest patch-packages (November 2005) I needed to install patches PHCO_31903, PHKL_32647 and PHSS_30970 to make the application work. In the quick install guide (/opt/boinc/doc/install) are the other two single patches listed, because it fixed some problems for a user on one system. But it could also run without problems. But the libc, ld and Extending Physical I/O Addressing are needed on some systems.
The C3600 is a older system. So you can not compare the benchmark with a actual Mac. The clamied credits are in good range with the hpux boinc clients. A C3600 would need about 8 hours to complete a seti WU.
There is a problem in the boinc clients. A boinc_client -attach-project deletes the contens in /opt/boinc/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu. A fix for this problem will be release in the next stable release. And it looks like this problem exists in the 4.72, too. Can you please reinstall the swpackage again, and backup /opt/boinc/projects. In the quick install guide at point 3 is a alternative attach procedure via edit the account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml described. Can you please try this out. |

Okay, guys, I spent the whole evening with trying to install the software correctly on my C3600. The server refuses again and again to send me some work. No workaround for the "attach-to-project"-procedure succeeded. This seems to be a little bit too complicated for a "technical home user" like me. On the other hand I needed just a few clicks to become a beta-tester for MacOSX. There are a lot of cheap HP-UX-PA-RISC machines on ebay which could do some work for the project. But before we need correctly attaching boinc-clients. I will wait for the next client-update and try again. |

Hi Ulenz, Not sure on the attach workaround if you're referring to modifying the account_setiathome.berkeley.edu file or not. That worked for me very well. Edit the <authenticator> entry in /opt/boinc/account_setiathome.berkeley.edu file, insert your key (the long hex code sent to you when you signed up). do a /sbin/init.d/boinc stop and /sbin/init.d/boinc start, then check the logfile. I think that may help you. Otherwise, let us know what error messages you get so we can help better. Good luck! /temple |

templeofdoom: Thanks for your quick reply. I started the boinc_client one time running /opt/boinc/boinc_client and stopped it. Then I edited account_setiathome.berkeley.edu as you told me. Logged in as root it now worked and downloaded a workunit - wow ! Hereafter I copied the whole /opt/boinc directory to /home/ulrich and used the command: "chown -R ulrich:users /home/ulrich/boinc". Logged in as user "ulrich" the application now works running "/home/ulrich/boinc/boinc_client". The process uses up to 99 % of the system resources and is owned by user ulrich and not by root. This is in no way a professional setup, but at the moment it works. ;-) |

Okay, guys, I spent the whole evening with trying to install the software correctly on my C3600. The server refuses again and again to send me some work. I have the impression, that you don't know, that Berkeley has limited resources, and a lot of work is done by volunteers. So you can not have the speed of the release of bugfixes with a commercial product. Also it is in the nature, that some problems, like this, will found later... I started the boinc_client one time running /opt/boinc/boinc_client and stopped it. Then I edited account_setiathome.berkeley.edu as you told me. Excatly that what was written down in the quick install guide in /opt/boinc/doc/install and the readme from within the swinstall. This is in no way a professional setup, but at the moment it works. ;-) Do you wan't to offense me ? - Do you know how many work it is to make a install prozedure which can handle all circumstances ? - I have not found the time to do it. Sorry guy, but RTFM, before you offense other peoples. |

Sorry, dotsch, but I didn't want to offense anybody. I only described my installation problems as a "technical home user" playing around with HP-UX-workstations. Moreover, I haven't known yet, that I've used the way described in the installation instructions indeed. The term "no professional setup" didn't mean your work, but my own installation efforts. And obviously I am too stupid to understand your instructions. Therefore I had to play around until it worked. In former times the commandline-clients of setihome@classic could be installed in the home-directory of the user who wanted to run it. This was a plain and simple solution. The editing of an account.xml-file is no problem in order to fix a bug. Why is it necessary to install the client using /opt/boinc logged in as root ? Thanks for your reply in advance. ;-) |
