Profile: Maaike van der Plas

Personal background
I'm a 22-year-old student of Medicine and Classics in the Netherlands. From a young age, I've been interested in the stars, but because no-one else in my environment knew or cared about anything scientific, I never did much with this interest, apart from watching and reading sci-fi. Recently, I decided that you're never too old to start learning things by yourself. I began buying books on Astronomy, got a decent pair of binoculars, went stargazing (first alone, then with friends who showed an interest) and joined a local astronomical society. And I love it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My interest in SETI began when I read the novel "Contact" by Carl Sagan. It's my favourite work of literature and soon afterwards, I heard about SETI@home. I immediately wanted to join. I think it's a very romantic idea that a group of strangers all over the world can help with the search for extraterrestrials. Getting amateurs involved in projects like these is a great way to popularize science and I appreciate it very much.
