Personal background
I was born in Brasil but came to Canada at 6 years of age where I have been living ever since (that makes it about 34 years in Canada). On a trip to Brasil to visit family, I was introduced to the girl who is now my wife. We were married nearly 8 years ago and have spawned 3 daughters currently 4.5 years old and twins 2.5.

I work in IT, specifically with Lotus Notes/Domino and associated products and have been with my current employer for 7.5 years. More recently, I have been learning Websphere and trying to learn more about the Management side of the IT industry.

Being Brasilian-born, I naturally follow futebol and was ecstatic at Brasil's Penta in 2002 (on to the Hexa in 2006!!!). We try to visit our relatives in Brasil once a year and take a little bit of time for ourselves to relax while there.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I think ET life exists? I think that given the vast numbers of galaxies, solar systems, planets, it is almost inconceivable that we are the only life forms in the universe. I suspect that if we were to ever discover intelligent life, they may not differ too much from us. My belief is that for sustainable life to be established, the conditions on the host planet would be much like ours (not too hot or too cold, correct mix of gases in the atmosphere, etc.) in order to establish the "soup of life". In order to evolve into a species that can either visit us or signal us, we would expect certain basic necessities such as the ability to construct tools (therefore an opposable thumb and stereoscopic vision, among other things)

2. Should we transmit a beacon? Why not? I have faith that intelligent life able to receive and decode the message we send would not behave in the traditional "Mars Attacks"-style of Hollywood films, trying to take over our planet or suck our brains. I think it would be fascinating to discover life elsewhere and perhaps even learn from them. What information to send? I guess a basic signal at first, something universally identifiable - how about the value of ¶ (is that the symbol for Pi?)

3. I run SETI@home mostly because I think it was a neat idea to get all the world's spare computer cycles working on one task.
