Personal background
I am an Arizona State University class of '82 Computer Science Engineer. I live in Caracas, Venezuela.

One of my personal interests, has always been the universe: What else is out there, beyond what can be seen through the naked eye during the night? Even though today, that´s a luxury in large urban areas like Caracas, where artificial lights and pollution don´t let us watch what I could when I was a kid. So, investigators of all kinds, like you at Team Seti, have become my eyes, to see the skies beyond what my eyesight allows me. That's why I have become a member of The Planetary Society, as well as an associate member of Team SETI.

Right now, I'm concerned with some more earthly matters, like the environment and wildlife preservation, I'm afraid we could destroy them before we can make contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligence; thus my active support to the WWF, económically as well as through the Panda Passport initiative. I enjoy reading (specially science and sci-fi), watching various sports events, listening to a wide range of music, and cooking for/with family and friends. But I also enjoy traveling and metting different people and cultures every time I can. However, with the availability of the Internet, the potential to learn more about almost any topic, helps me to achieve that when I cannot travel. So, I spend a couple of hours a day surfing it in search of knowledge. Why? Just because.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Ever since I can remmember, I´ve looked up the sky and wonder, not if, but where is it. Yes, I did say where because I think that with such a mind boggling number of galaxies, stars, commets, planets, moons, asteroids and the likes in the Universe, we shouldn't be selfishly asking ourselves if there is live out there (intelligent as we have come to know it, or not); but rather: where and how far away is it. Could we make contact? How would be go about it?

I think we should deploy permanent devices that send some kind signal on a periodic basis. A signal that could not be mistaken, or affected by, everything else we are putting out there today. But we should reevaluate the idea of what would be understood by whom or whatever picks it up. I've read on magazines and heard on TV shows about math being a universal language. I know that images of humans and pictograms of our planetary system have been sent to space attached to spacecraft by NASA. Now, aren´t there any more primeval ways to communicate? Anything that we could be sure, that will be understood by the recipient? I'm no investigative scientist, but it comes to mind trying to transmit emotions-generating signals. Those signals could be simmulated trough the use of ligth or sound waves, or any other means known to a multidisciplinary group. Those signals, if possible at all, should emmulate natural ones known to us to generate trust and joy to humans and other earthly beigns. Just a thought.

I do hope with my tiny contribution (using SETI@home), added to that from a lot of people, to help in the search for answers to the where and how far. Once we know those answers, we should know where to specifically point our beacon, as well as what kind of message and in it what form we want to convey it to promote a peaceful interchange of knowledge.
