Personal background |
I was born in 1946 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and grew up on a farm about 80 kilometers from Windsor. I returned to Windsor to attend the University of Windsor and earn a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
One of my summer jobs was working in the Advanced Projects and Reactor Physics Division at the Chalk River Nuclear Labs for Atomic Energy of Canada. One project on reactor cooling interested me so much that its extension became my Masters project. When I finished the project I thought there was little future in energy recovery and I had become interested in Noise and Vibration related topics. I eventually completed a Ph.D. in modelling of exhaust pulses from an engine which turned out to be the first automotive related Ph.D. at Windsor.
Upon final graduation, I was hired as an Assistant Professor at the University of Windsor. I became the Chair of the Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering Programs in 1999 and the Head of the Department in 2001.
I started reading Science Fiction and Fantasy novels when I was 12 and have been consuming them ever since. My other great interest is computers with which I've had more than a passing interest since learning to program an IBM 1620 when I was still in high school. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I run SETI@home because I wanted to participate in a search for intelligent life that I hope will succeed. I have always been interested in space and its exploration. One of my most thrilling moments was watching the broadcast of Neil Armstrong setting foot on the Moon. Somehow I feel this all fits together as we explore space and look for new discoveries. |
