Profile: Eli

Personal background
I am a mechanical engineer, working in civil forensics, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am interested in history, both the middle-ages as well as more recent. I am a bronze caster and am working on restoring a 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood. I am very involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism, largely as an armoured combatant, but also interested in metal work both casting and smithing. I am a dreamer and a planner, I like to fix things and make things and solve mechanical problems. I will answer any question honestly, althought the answer may be "I don't think that is any of your business".
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I harbour a tiny hope that one day I will see the rhythmic flicker of a signal. I have no doubt that there is other life in the universe; other intelligent life, in a form that we would recognize. I am less certain that we are at the right place and time to find them (or to have them find us), for the same reason that I am certain they are out there; the universe is so incomprehensibly vast. However, if we don't look we will certainly never receive any signals that might be there, so I join with my fellow dreamers, I turn my face to the sky (in a metaphorical sense) and I listen.
