Profile: Jim Thompson

Personal background
I am a retired California Highway Patrol Sergeant with 31 years of service. I spend my time as a freelance photographer (hobbyist) shooting primarily wildlife, landscape and my grandchildren. When in high school I was a volunteer at a privately owned planetarium and observatory where I lectured, ran the planetarium show, and assisted the public in using the telescopes in our rotating dome. Since then (the early 60's) so much more has been discovered about our universe; I am constantly amazed by new discoveries.

We enjoy spending holidays on the big island of Hawaii, and while there I almost always drive the the summit of Mauna Kea to photograph the observatories and sunsets. One of my fantasies involves actually being allowed into on of the Keck facilities.
