Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course life exists elsewhere in the Universe, I don't think there is any doubt about this any longer following recent discoveries like the Mars project. Depending on how you define extraterrestrial life, I think a discovery is immanent. Intelligent life is something else. So far the theory of intelligent life as an accident of nature doesn't give any hope. But I suppose that also depends on your definition of what intelligent life is. If it is a definition that includes other beings (rather than organisms) that have the capability of reasoning and logic then I think the danger could be very real - we just have to look at ourselves to realise the potential for destruction. Great discoveries are usually messy and / or low key affairs, mostly vigorously (and sometimes mercilessly) pursued. But I think it could just as well happen by accident.

The beacon idea could work, although I'm a great believer in the idea of a prime directive: not to interfere in the development of other cultures. We've messed it up on Earth, I'd hate to think we'd do the same for the rest of the Universe. It wouldn't be such a hot idea to send information on how to split an atom. Perhaps a stream of music would be cool because music seems to be the one thing we all enjoy... erm... even crave!

I think the SETI project is great. Using the biggest computer on this planet for a peaceful mission is an idea that gives rise to a lot of hope. I'm involved because I want to support Berkeley, who have proven in the past that really way out ideas like Un*x can be utilised effectively and thereby show the inherent genius of these ideas. Without such open minds the world would be truly doomed.
