Personal background |
I'm a 30-something software analyst from Halifax who adores all things sci-fi. I also love indie music, new tech, and think that the most outrageous thing ever done in tv-history was the cancellation of Firefly. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I have been interested in the 'search' since I first saw and then read Carl Sagan's masterpiece 'COSMOS'. I've been hooked ever since, drinking up every space opera or hard sci-fi novel to come my way. Since I'm not a brilliant scientist or physicist, SETI@HOME is the best way for me to contribute to the effort.
I think that the project is intriguing but I suppose it's also frustrating. There are volunteers that have been waiting 10 years for that 'eureka' moment when a series of signal spikes are decidedly not random and not naturally occuring. By nature, I'm not a patient person, but I think that nuturing the dream of contact is in itself, enough for me.
There doesn't seem to be much interaction between members of teams or in the forums, aside from a few hardore lurkers. It would be great to have quarterly chat nights where everyone can log in at same time and discuss news, events, rumours and whatever else. |
