Personal background
I Have been interested in space and astronomy since I was 7 years old, I also started reading a lot of Sci-Fi, built my own telescope from cardboard rolls and a broken binocular lenses at 12, "radio telescope" from a broken(fixed it as good as a 16 year old can) satellite dish and a broken military radio I scored of a army base dump heap.

At 25 I built my first high grade armature 8 inch newtownian telescope and started to do astro photography.

Do I believe there is life out there?

What Jodi Foster said in the movie Contact as my maxim.

HELL YEA!!!!!!!!

Why have we not heard of them?

Maybe they are too far away, not interested, or to freaking scared to contact us because of our love of violent movies(thinking it a warning to stay away because we always win in the movies) or don't need radio to communicate(Read Kevin J Anderson, The Saga of seven suns)
