Profile: Melissa

Personal background
My name is Melissa, I am a 20 year-old Computer Science undergraduate student from Columbus, Ohio. I am proud to participate in SETI@Home.

I am hoping to raise awareness of the importance of scientific research and community participation through volunteering.

My hobbies include playing video games, designing and building 3D paper sculptures (papercraft) and repairing the computers of friends and family.

What is papercrafting?
It is a bit like origami, in that you design a 3D model out of paper. Unlike origami, the shape of the model and how it is put together is preordained with papercraft. You first print out what\\\'s commonly referred to as a template, on paper (the paper can be regular letter paper, but a lot of modelers use thicker cardstock as well), cut the pieces out, and then fold on the given lines and glue together to form the model.

If you are interested in papercraft, I would suggest you do some research online, as most templates are distributed digitally. If you find a design template with the aliases Freebooter Fox or Stickypurplecat listed as the designer then you have somehow stumbled onto one of my own designs. Some examples of models I have built can be found on my Flickr profile.

Here are a couple of pictures of models I have assembled, though they are not my own designs.

Here are a couple that I have designed myself.
The one on the left is a 3D version of the Digg website logo.

If you are looking for video game related (especially Nintendo) papercrafts, I would suggest you check out the Nintendo Papercraft Blog. I would also suggest you check out the Papercraft and Origami Board (/po/) on 4chan for crafts and origami patterns for all sorts of shapes and models.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@Home because I am excited to be given the opportunity to help out with important projects that will influence science and technology for decades to come. I love the fact that the internet has connected us in such a way that projects like this are possible.

I hope that science and technology both continue to evolve in a way that community participation becomes a regular part of research and development.
