Personal background
I am an astronomy person, even though I am not what you would consider a scholarly person.I am not formally educated very much, but have a self education in astronomy that has helped me to discover the wonder, awe and beauty of the Universe! How can one not be excited about the magnificent discoveries coming from Hubble,Cassini and the development of the Space Station!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I like to participate in SETI because I,like most sensible people, know that there's undoubtedly other species in our Universe(in the Milky Way galaxy, there are several hundred billion suns, there are billions of galaxies...The math assures us of this). There's no way to tell when and where 'Contact' will occur in our history, but it will eventually happen!
I think it's even possible that a few species have traversed planet Earth's atmosphere, but, upon observing the human race, said no thanks and turned the 'mother-ship' around(in other words, they witnessed the blood and carnage we do to our own species, and, like any sensible being, asked "How can we expect them to be able to accept us,when they can't even accept members of their own species?"
So,if the last part is true, then they can already 'hear' us,but maybe they don't want us to hear them just yet!
But when they do,maybe SETI will be the ones to pick it up,and that's why I think this is a good project that should always be supported and continued
