Personal background
I live in the UK and not USA, as shown on my "class list". My home town is Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. (Think Yachting). I am old and fairly decrepit -74, strokes in 1999 & 2003. SETIATHOME seemed as good a way to employ a resting computer as any and I much enjoyed a day trip to Berkeley from San Francisco some years ago. My previous employer was Her Majesty as a Major in her Land Forces (OK, Army, then). End of story.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Must exist but very doubtful if time and space will allow us to find it.
2. No. I think there are other far more rewarding causes on which to spend vast sums of money. The mind boggles at the trillions spent at Canaveral, Guiana etc - for what ? A pen that writes under water and some fetching photographs.
3. It doesn't seem to be a money gobbling experiment and I like the idea of "audience participation". There was a very badly promoted similar project in UK to do with cancer research, which would probably have been more sensible, but it seems to have died the death.
