Profile: Gregory T. McFarland

Personal background
Received my degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Penn State in '94. Worked in the factory automation field until a layoff in December of 2001. Since that time I have entered a state of semi-retirement, spending my time gardening and working on tractors in western Pennsylvania. Also enjoy reading science fiction; favorite authors are David Brin, Orsonn Scott Card, Gregory Benford and Roger MacBride Allen.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally do not believe that humans will ever discover intelligent extra-terrestrial life. The dangers to life that exist in the galaxy are so great that I think what happened on Earth is probably a fluke. Then we have to consider that the distances between stars are so vast, the possibility of receiving a signal is very slim. However, it is well worth the effort and money to look. If we don't look, how can we ever really know for sure? If another form of intelligent life was found, it would be an amazing event for humanity. Perhaps it would help humanity to forget our differences and work together for the betterment of all. And so I let this software run on my computer in the hope that one day I will be proven wrong.
