Profile: Tom Brown

Personal background
Due to severe artritus I retired on medical grouds in 1997 after spent my working life either in the Royal Air Force as a Ground Wireless Fitter or in the computer industry as programmer/systems analyst/project manager.

As I unable walk my PC has become my window on the world and is the means by which I maintain contact with my ex-RAF friends around the world. So, as you might imagine, I am very dependent on my box of tricks.

My techie background has enabled me to build my own PC and currently I am running an Athlon 1.8 on an MSI K7T266 Pro 2 motherboard. My latest upgrade to this processor has brought my processing time per work unit down from around 6 hours 30 mins to around 4 hours 30 mins ands future upgrades will reduce this further.

Hobbies are naturally of a sedentary nature but I am able to provide tech support for friends and occasionally am able to introduce new PC users in my area to the vagaries of the internet and emailing. My oldest student is an 82 year old venerable gentleman who is now able to chat to the members of our RAF Association chat line.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I do believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe. In fact, I believe that the existence of life, where conditions permit, is the rule and not the exception. I feel that there are only two ways that this life will be discovered: a) SETI will eventually find what we are all looking for or, b) They will come to us, perhaps they are already here.

2. The idea of sending a beacon is thought provoking but we have been doing this ever since the invention of radio communications. Those original signals are now about 100 light years out in space by now.

3. I run SETI@home for a number of reasons; a) I would like to have been a part of the effort when SETI finally hits "Pay Dirt", b) I believe this will happen, otherwise what is the point? c) It is a good way to take up my spare capacity.

So far as my views on the project are concerned I sometimes get frustrated at the lack of bandwidth and, because I am now able to process units quickly I would like to be able to downloads more than one work unit at a time, perhaps 10 at a time.
