Profile: Chris Anderson

Personal background
Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana in the USA. I was transplanted to Houston, TX in 1982 at the age of 12 and have been here for the last 21 years now at the age of 33.

Graduated with a BS in Computer Science in 1996 and started my career as a UNIX systems administrator. I specialize in Sun / Solaris servers. I run SETI@Home on my UNIX and Windows desktops as well as a few of my administration servers.

My hobbies include computers ( obviously ), video games, programming, scuba, motorcycles and astronomy. One of my graduation gifts to myself was a Meade LX200 telescope.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely believe we aren't the only life in the universe. Statistically it would be rediculous to believe otherwise. How it will be discovered is beyond me .. but I would guess it would be by some more advanced life form travelling to our planet. Then again there is a lot of evidence to indicate they have already done this.

Sending a beacon for others to find is a good idea. While there may be more advanced life forms in the universe .. it is still vast and would be difficult for them to find us if we wait for them to just stumble across our planet. All the TV and radio signals we transmit probably serves just as well as anything we might purposely transmit .. if not better. So I don't think we should spend to many resources on this task.

I run SETI@home since it is the only way that I can contribute in the search .. and also since I don't mind sharing those free cycles on my processors :)
