Personal background
28, married, one 2 year old train addict, one catnip addict. Accounting assistant trying to find someone who will hire me until I can finish my 4 year degree.

I just moved to Dallas, after most of a lifetime in eastern Iowa. After the culture shock wears off, things will be great. =)

I'm a member of the SCA, which doesn't leave time for many other hobbies. I also enjoy reading (mainly sci-fi and fantasy), watching anime, and chasing my son around. I've been a member of ISCA BBS since 1995 and still participate in the community there (I'm Siona, come by and say hi).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
[written in 2001]
In an infinite universe, why can't there be other life forms besides ourselves? We may not ever live in a Star Trek or Star Wars-type universe, but think of what ideas even one alien species could share with us? Our influence on the universe spreads outward with every new television broadcast. I sincerely hope that someday we are not judged solely by our "Must See TV." 8)

We should do what we can to seek other life in the universe and to make ourselves known. There are, of course, always risks as sci-fi movies are wont to show us, but I believe it's our duty to explore this wonderful universe our species is allowed to experience.

I signed on to Seti@Home a long time ago, but didn't reinstall the software after our system crashed. I was reminded of this project by many cues, including newsgroup taglines and seeing it as the screensaver of a scientist being interviewed on tv. I may not be a scientist, but I like being able to help the progress of science in any way that I can.

I'm glad I've rediscovered SETI@Home because I had forgotten how much CPU time is wasted that could be used in many ways. Even if intelligent life is never found, I think the concepts of SETI@Home can be harnessed for research in the future for almost any subject.

[updated 2005]
I didn't last long after I logged in for the 2nd time. Seti@Home on dialup can be quite annoying if you have to share a phone line with the computer. But now that I have escaped the broadband-dead reaches of rural Iowa and have cable internet again, I'm willing to give it another shot.
