Profile: Pi Guy

Personal background
I live in Oly, WA and enjoy computers and mathematics. Most of my life is spent with my rubrics cube or either memorizing or calculating pi. I'm an active "go" player. "My life is futile", as my calculus teacher constantly reminds us, but I think there's some little things I can do to make a difference in my short, pathetic life. I'm working toward passing the actuarial exams and who knows, I might even get a job some day. For now I'm just your above-average nerd. In the future, I will be the king of them all!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am certain extraterrestrial life exists, or has exhisted in the past. I do think, however, that life in the universe is still scarce and intelligent life is even scarcer still. I doubt there are many alien races having the technology (or the will) to travel to our lonely side of the cosmos. I'm sure one day they will find us or we will find them, it's just a matter of time. Radio-technology is the way they will most likely communicate with us, so it is a good way to start looking. I became interested in radio telescopes and SETI when I read Contact many many years ago. Having the chance of getting that message on my computer is too good to pass up. I think the government should spend a lot more money in the SETI project and various space projects and less on bombs. The war with Iraq has been estimated at costing trillions of dollars which would be more than enough to design and build an intersteller space ship or a space elevator! (or at least enough to pay off a few of my student loans).

I think we should stay away from sending messages in space. Enough is already sent out there on accident, but we should try to live relitively unnoticed until we actually evolve a bit more. There's no reason to pass our dumb fighting, bad logic, and stupidy throughout the universe; or even worse, to send technology to civilizations worse than us. I hope for the SETI project to be a success in my lifetime and I will be glad to be a part of it!
